Why the purple group is always last
Purple is not the group with the hardest words. It is the group that is not about words at all — and once you see what it is actually testing, it stops being the one that ends your run.
Ask anyone who plays Connections daily which group ends their run and the answer is the same. Purple. Not because the words are obscure — they are usually the most ordinary words on the board — but because purple is the only group that is not asking what the words mean.
Yellow through blue ask one question. Purple asks another.
The first three groups are categories in the plain sense: things that belong together because of what they are. Kinds of pasta. Words for "angry." Teams in one division. You solve them by knowing things.
Purple is a mechanism. The four words share a shape rather than a meaning: a hidden smaller word, a homophone, a missing letter, a prefix that turns each one into something else. That is why staring harder at the words does not help — you are looking for the wrong kind of pattern.
The order of operations that works
Do not start with purple. Do not even look at it. Solve the three groups you can name completely, and purple becomes whatever four words are left — at which point you do not need to understand it to submit it.
That sounds like a cheat, and it is not. The puzzle is built so that the purple words look like they belong somewhere else; that is the whole trap. A word that reads as a perfectly good member of the yellow group is often purple's anchor. Removing certainty from the other three groups is what exposes it.
When you are forced to guess
Sometimes two groups both look four-strong and you have to commit. Count the leftovers. If your candidate yellow leaves twelve words that do not split into three clean fours, one of your four is wrong — and it is almost certainly the one that also fits purple's shape.
A last tell: purple categories are often phrased as a pattern rather than a description. "___ ball." "Words containing a hidden animal." If a category name has a blank in it, that is the group you should have saved for last.
